Retail spaces in Mauritius embody a captivating mix of cultural diversity, commercial vibrancy and modern amenities. The country now offers a diverse array of retail spaces that has evolved dramatically over the past 2 decades - now boasting a total of 25 shopping malls, split between 4 destination malls and 21 main regional malls.

Destination malls are classified as those that are visited by residents from all provincial districts, and regional malls are visited by inhabitants residing around the vicinity of those malls. A notable contributor to this retail evolution is ‘Asencia’, who own and operate seven malls across the country such as Bagatelle and Phoenix Mall.

Navigating the retail landscape involves understanding market trends and consumer behaviour. Based on an audience study by ‘Analysis Kantar’ during the last quarter of 2023, 84% of the population visited a shopping mall during the month with Bagatelle Mall and Tribecca being the most visited. Around 60% of the audience studied visited specially to eat at the Food courts.

In terms of super/hypermarkets, there is a grand total of 141 centres located around Mauritius. Interestingly the outlet with the most stores is ‘Dreamprice’ with 32 countrywide locations. However ‘Winners’, with 24 countrywide locations achieved the most visits by shoppers with an average of 48.25% of the total audience. The criteria of driving choice for consumer preference was driven by accessibility to the location.
