You are a foreigner with your family and need to enrol your children in a private school in Mauritius. You may therefore wonder where to settle so that you do not spend an hour in the car every morning.
The most practical approach is to choose the school before choosing the property. Mauritius has no single official ranking of the best private schools, so families should compare curriculum, accreditation, age range, location and future educational progression.
For an English-medium education, Northfields International School is one of the most practical all-through options. Located in Labourdonnais Village, Mapou, it serves children approximately from ages 1 to 18. Its pathway includes early years, primary education, Cambridge programmes, Cambridge IGCSE in Years 10 and 11, and either the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or A-Levels in Years 12 and 13. Families should first consider Mapou, Labourdonnais and Beau Plan, with Grand Baie and Pereybere as wider options
Le Bocage International School located at Mount Ory in Moka, is a strong secondary option. It offers the IB Middle Years Programme for Forms 1 to 5, Cambridge IGCSE in Forms 4 and 5, and the IB Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme for Forms 6 and 7. Moka, Saint-Pierre, Réduit and Helvetia are the most logical residential areas.
On the west coast, Westcoast International Secondary School in Cascavelle offers Cambridge Lower Secondary, Cambridge IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme. It serves secondary-age pupils, approximately from ages 11 to 18. Tamarin, Cascavelle, Flic en Flac and Black River are the most practical locations.
For French education, École du Nord in Mapou serves children from approximately age 3 through 3ème, the final year of lower secondary education, around age 15. Lycée La Bourdonnais in Forest Side, Curepipe, offers a French pathway from primary education through Terminale, approximately ages 5 to 18. Lycée des Mascareignes in Helvetia, Saint-Pierre, provides Seconde, Première and Terminale.
Once the school has been identified, contact its admissions office before signing a lease or purchasing a property. Confirm that places are available in the correct year group, ask about waiting lists, and request the current fee schedule, registration charges, transport costs and school calendar. École du Nord, for example, advises families to begin early because places may be limited and placement assessments may be required for children transferring from outside the French education system.
Prepare the admissions file in advance. Depending on the school, this may include birth certificates, passports, previous school reports, transfer documents, vaccination records, proof of address and residence or work permits. Mauritius’ Ministry of Education lists additional documentation required from non-Mauritian applicants, including passports and residence permits for parents and children. Only after admission is confirmed should the family test the school route at the actual morning arrival time, check bus coverage and decide whether to rent for a year before buying.
