The winners of the Mauritius Real Estate Awards 2025, presented by PropertyCloud.mu, were revealed last night during an exclusive black-tie ceremony at the Intercontinental Resort, Balaclava. The prestigious gala brought together over 150 leaders from the real estate sector, including respected industry partners and the evening's Chief Guest of Honour, the Honourable Shakeel Mohammed, Minister of Housing and Land.
In a compelling keynote address, Minister Mohammed called for a Public-Private Partnership to solve Housing Crisis. He highlighted the severe housing crisis, characterized by 52,000 people awaiting social housing and an average price increase of 23% that marginalizes the middle class. Faced with this challenge and a lack of government funds, he urged the audience to engage in public-private partnerships (PPP) as a central solution. He proposed that the government offer fiscal advantages and a guaranteed return to developers who invest in the construction of social and affordable housing, even subsidizing the cost of land for young first-time buyers. Furthermore, he solicited the expertise of the private sector to improve the maintenance and management of existing social housing.
"The good days in a country where land is limited and scarce can only be made to last longer when the sun will rise for everyone," he said.
The Minister stressed that collaboration and regulatory stability are indispensable for the prosperity of the real estate sector to extend to the entire population.
