Social Housing Project Handover in Bambous

Families living in Bambous receive keys to their new home.

The National Housing Development Company Ltd (NHDC) recently announced the opening of its social housing project - Résidence Camélia in Bambous. Located in La Valette, Bambous - this project will enable the relocation of 180 families living near the La Ferme reservoir to the newly constructed housing project which consists of 223 housing units. The project was undertaken to address the need to rehabilitate the La Ferme reservoir, which currently stands at more than 100 years old. 

Owners of the new units were presented with their keys during the inauguration event held on 24 June 2024. In attendance was; the Honorable Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; accompanied by the Honorable Steven Obeegadoo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Housing; and the Honorable Alan Ganoo GCSK, Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail.

In his address, the Prime Minister underlined that the Government had planned meticulously for the settlement of the 180 families, enabling them to remain in a familiar environment by ensuring that their new residence was not far from their previous living area, as well as the suitability of the size and configuration of the housing unit to meet the needs of each family.

Résidence Camélia forms part of the government's efforts to construct 12,000 social housing units through the New Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD). The first phase of the project, consisting of some 8,000 residential units, has been progressing well with the handover of many projects already completed. The second phase for the remaining 4,000 units will begin construction in the 2025-2026 Financial year.
